Whether you’re just curious, or have already been fortunate to have encountered this breed, or looking to buy or breed one of your own, we can help.
The registry is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting this ancient and magnificent sport horse.
THE ORIGINAL SPORT HORSE
The registry was founded in 2000 by Peggy Stockbridge, a sport horse breeder in New York State. Through her study of bloodlines, she learned that the Percheron draft horse was not always the massive animal it is today. Centuries ago, in the early days of the breed in Europe, Percherons were highly infused with Arabian blood.
This handsome, athletic horse was no doubt known for its versatility centuries ago - a carriage horse, a stylish saddle horse, a safe horse for the older rider, and a forgiving teacher for young riders. Great physical ability and the breed’s extraordinary temperament and intelligence, make the Desert Norman the original sport horse.
Understanding the strength and versatility inherent in the Arab-Percheron cross, Mrs. Stockbridge decided to begin her own breeding program, as well as encouraging others to do so by founding an official stud book and registry records.
Peggy continues her involvement with the registry as adviser to the current coordinator, Kay Langmuir of Ontario, who first discovered the Desert Norman’s amazing qualities 30 years ago, when she bought one as a teenager. Kay currently owns a Desert Norman bred by Mrs. Stockbridge.
